Dalguise Flooding Initiative Welcomed

THE DECISION by Perth and Kinross Council’s Enterprise and Infrastructure Committee to carry out a study on the need for a flood prevention scheme in the Dalguise area has been welcomed by MSP John Swinney.

A number of properties in the Dalguise area were seriously affected by flooding in January 2005 when flood banks on the River Tay were breached. John Swinney has been working with local residents to secure improvements that would protect their properties and the local community.

P&K Council has agreed to

* undertake a phased flooding study that would examine the scale of the flooding problem last year, and

* determine if an economic case can be justified to implement a flooding initiative.

The MSP commented: “I am very pleased Perth and Kinross Council has decided to undertake a study on the flooding issue at Dalguise. I have been pressing the Council for some time to undertake this work and examine if more effective flood defences can be created. We now live at a time when the occurrence of these floods is more frequent and I think it is important this question is re-examined.

“A number of my constituents in the Dalguise area had to go through the trauma – not for the first time – of seeing their homes, properties and community being badly affected by flooding. Having spent time with constituents in the immediate aftermath of flooding incidents I can see it is a terrible experience for all concerned.

“My constituents have been very active in pursuing this issue and I am glad we are now making progress. The study to be undertaken will give a clearer picture of what work can be justified and what work would be effective. I hope this will give some peace of mind to my constituents.

“The issue of flooding remains a major question for a number of communities and I am pressing for other schemes, particularly at Dunkeld and Birnam, to be developed as soon as practicable.”
