F&M: Latest Scottish Executive Measures
Announcing the latest measures from the Scottish Government to ensure Scotland’s livestock industry is back to normal as soon as possible, cabinet secretary for Rural Affairs, Richard Lochhead, the Rural Affairs Secretary indicated that operators will now be able to apply for licenses for collection centres to resume allowing them to operate from Wednesday (22.08.07).
Commenting on this, MSP John Swinney said: “My colleague Richard Lochhead has made it clear that the prime focus of the Government at this time is to work with the livestock industry to allow normal service to resume shortly.
“Obviously we have to work with the sector concerned, industry bodies and the UK Government on this issue, and I am confident that the steps the Scottish Government is taking will allow my constituents affected by preventative measures to continue working until fully normal service is resumed.” |

He continued: “My constituency covers a large rural area and involves many aspects of the agricultural industry. Rural industries are equally important to Scotland as a whole and I welcome the pro-active approach which has been adopted by the Cabinet Secretary to ensure minimum damage to my constituents.
“The situation is obviously developing and progressing on a daily basis but I am confident that Angus and Perthshire’s crucial livestock industries will be back to normal shortly. The feedback I have received from my constituents affected is that they are pleased at the Government’s action thus far on this issue and welcome any moves to protect their livelihoods.”
He concluded: “This Government will continue to put the agricultural sector at the forefront of our agenda to reflect its invaluable contribution to the Scottish economy.”
