New Face at SNW

Laura McAuley is now working with woodland volunteer groups and primary schools for Aberfeldy-based Scottish Native Woods. As the new Community Education Officer for SNW she will be giving guided walks and talks, running environmental education programmes and delivering the Growing Up With Trees project.
Growing up with Trees is a practical project where children learn to become involved with their environment, from a small area of their own playground to a community woodland or even a local estate. With regular visits from, and field trips with, experts at Scottish Native Woods, schools can set up their own small native tree nursery from scratch.

The project is for children of primary school age but which also involves teachers, parents and members of the local community, Beginning with an autumnal seed collection, tiny tree plants will be grown and looked after until they are ready to be planted out as little trees. As these Children’s Woods become established, they provide a home for a great variety of wildlife. Some trees of the first projects are now over 20 feet high.

In effect, schools will grow their own outdoor classroom where topics such as ecology, biodiversity and the cultural landscape can be explored. Tasks such as weeding, watering and building protection from hungry visitors encourage commitment from the children and their teachers, but plenty of practical advice and help from SNW makes it a fun learning experience. It is a team effort, which will encourage communication, personal confidence and a collective sense of achievement.

Laura is based mainly in Fife, but also looks forward to making contacts and sharing ideas in Perthshire. The Growing Up With Trees project has been running since the early nineties and woodland areas have grown at Kenmore and Logierait Primary schools from some of the earliest nurseries.
