Reassurances About Aberfeldy Show & Games

Despite the recent devastating news about Foot and Mouth Disease and the subsequent loss of the cattle and sheep classes from this weekend’s Agricultural Show, the committee remains upbeat and confident that it can still provide plenty of entertainment on Friday and Saturday.

The convenors met for an emergency meeting last weekend and, having taken veterinary advice, unanimously agreed that the event should go ahead, just as it did in 2001 under similar circumstances.

On Friday 10 August, local youngsters and the young-at-heart will be taking part in the various horse and pony classes with judging starting at 9.00am. Also on Friday is the very popular pet show so please bring your pets along and take part. Pets can be of any variety so long as they can be restrained and are well behaved.

On Saturday, judging again starts at 9.00am with Highland Ponies and Clydesdale Horses. Normally, cattle and sheep judging would start at the same time and there is no doubt that they will be greatly missed. However, the organisers have been working hard to fill the extra space created and a number of extra trade stances and sales outlets have been accommodated.

Despite the awful weather recently endured by the horticulturists, we are assured a good entry in all sections, including the children’s classes. Entries for the W.R.I. classes are also promising.

Our Chieftain this year is Freddie Davies, now living at Camserney, who will lead the march of the Clan Menzies and declared the Highland Gathering open. We fully expect to have a large number of highland dancers, pipers and heavyweight athletes and there has been a lot of interest in the hill race. We take entries on the field for the children’s races which is always very entertaining.

Our main attraction in the ring this year is Phillip Gibbons from Ridgeside Falconry in County Durham who will entertain the crowd with a fascinating display by his birds of prey.

Other features include the Menzies Stone competition and the tug-o’-war.

There will be full catering facilities on the park as well as a bar so please, do come along for a great day out.
