Rural Shows: Government Decision Welcomed

The Scottish Government’s decision not to apply additional regulatory burdens on agricultural shows has been welcomed by MSP John Swinney.

Proposals were in the pipeline under the Animal Gatherings (Scotland) Order for tighter controls to be applied to animal gatherings. The draft order went out for consultation in November last year, since when show organisers have been concerned that the proposals would cause heavy financial burdens on annual, one-off events which were integral to rural community life.

Over-Regulation
Speaking after the Rural Affairs Secretary outlined his decision on 26 June, John Swinney said: “I was very pleased to see that agricultural shows will not be unfairly burdened by additional legislation. This Government is determined to tackle the obstruction of over-regulation in the agriculture sector and I am sure that rural communities will benefit from this."

He continued: “Agricultural shows play a pivotal role in showcasing rural produce and industry to a wider audience during the summer months, and I have no doubt that the moves to prevent additional legislation will be welcomed.

“Angus and Perthshire have a strong rural element and a wide variety of shows across North Tayside, all of which attract a large crowd from the local area and wider afield.

“They are very important to the local rural economy, and I am pleased that the Scottish Government has maintained the conditions for their continued success in my constituency and indeed across Scotland.”
